Mary Rand's Olympic Jump

Mary Denise Rand, MBE (née Bignal on 10 February 1940) is a former English track and field athlete.

She won the long jump at the 1964 Summer Olympics by breaking the world record, the first British female to win an Olympic gold medal in track and field. She remains the only Great Britain female athlete to win three medals in a single Games.

You can read more about Mary Rand on her wikipedia page - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Rand, you can also see Olympic Long Jump Highlights from Tokyo 1964 Olympics here on Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcmaNL0IbsU

There is a plaque commemorating the world record long jump (6.76 metres) by Rand at the 1964 Olympic Games in the Market Place in Wells.

On 26 January 2012 Wells awarded both Mary Rand and Danny Nightingale the Freedom of the City, Danny Nightingale won the modern pentathlon at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, more information on Danny Nightingale can be found here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Nightingale
