Shepton Mallet Boxing Club sees female participation soar thanks to Sportivate funding
Shepton Mallet Boxing Club has seen a large rise in the number of women among its ranks, thanks to new sessions supported by funding from Sportivate.
The club has been working in partnership with Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership on a campaign to encourage more women and girls to take up boxing.
Head coach Paul Warren said: 'The sessions have been a resounding success and we are proud to host groups of 15-18 regular participants of various ages and abilities.
'A number of the girls initially came along to the sessions to improve their fitness and confidence, but some are keen to take the next step and compete. We already have two carded female boxers, Millie Warren and Leah Cannings. Millie is former Schools champion and Leah is eagerly awaiting her first bout. They're inspiring the other girls to give it a go too.'
The club, which is based at St Paul Community Centre runs a beginners course for women and girls every Thursday, and participants receive a hoody and reduced club membership when they finish the course.'
Paul and his team are keen to debunk any myths that are keeping women from taking up the sport. He added: 'Boxing gyms are set up to take people from beginner to advanced stage, so don't think you will be the only one there who has never boxed before.'
