Mendip Rocks! Blast off for its 9th year.
This seasons Mendip Rocks! Events will once again celebrate the unique geology of the Mendip Hills and will run from 10 August to 20 October. The programme has been organised by the Somerset Earth Science Centre, AONB Unit and The Mendip Society.
There is something for everyone from family days, fossil hunts, walks, talks and tours of local quarries. This year we've also introduced armchair caving, tours of water pumping stations and a Mendip Rocks! Art Exhibition 'Marking Time'. The programme offers everyone the chance to discover some of Mendip's geological secrets with many events being held on sites that are not normally open to the public.
We are also delighted to announce that this year we will be joined by Prof. Iain Stewart who will be giving a talk on Selling Planet Earth: communicating geology to the public, at the Geo Lecture Day on Saturday 12th October.
Explore Ebbor Gorge, Sunday 20th October. 10am-4pm
Fun packed family day of ‘sand pit fossil digs’, story-telling, guided walks to the gorge and caves and much more to reveal the reserve’s unique geology and rare archaeological finds. With Mendip Hill’s AONB, SESC, The Mendip Society and Natural England. Prof Danielle Schreve will give guided walks to see Gully Cave digs – site of important early mammal bone finds. Booking for geology walks and cave tours on arrival. Parking on site. Family activities to include pebble wildlife trail and geo time story trail in gorge, rocks and fossils and pebble painting.
Whilst the majority of events are free some have limited places available and therefore booking is essential. The full programme is available here together with details on how to book.
