What’s on in Wells

Live Summer Opera - Outdoor Event

Date : Thursday 14 July, 2022 – Friday 15 July, 2022
Location : Bishops Palace and Gardens, Wells

Barber of Seville

What could be more lovely on a balmy summer’s evening than sitting in the open air listening to Puccini’s Tosca, or Rossini’s The Barber of Seville? Even better with a glass of Pimms or Prosecco and a picnic hamper for the interval! The medieval Palace with the Cathedral as backdrop is the perfect place to experience two of the greatest operas ever written.

Project Factory is thrilled to welcome Opera Brava to Wells with fully staged performances of these two operas on 14th and 15th July in the wonderful setting of The Bishop’s Palace gardens. Opera Brava is one of Britain’s leading professional touring opera companies and is excited to be making its debut in Wells. Project Factory is working in partnership with The Bishop’s Palace to bring this new cultural venture to Wells.

Giacomo Puccini’s romantic opera Tosca is a tale of passion and jealousy as its heroine Tosca, a fiery opera singer, fights to save her lover Cavaradossi from the villain of the piece, the police chief Scarpia.

The Barber of Seville, by Gioachino Rossini, is a comedy. Its story tells of the mischievous escapades of Figaro, the barber, as he helps Count Almaviva to prise the beautiful Rosina from the clutches of her lecherous guardian, Dr Bartolo. Both will be sung in English.

Bring a picnic and your friends and make an evening of it. Cool wine and Pimms and other refreshments will be on sale. Families are very welcome, so do also bring your children and let’s make opera a new addition to the growing programme of events in Wells. Book early.

If you are new to opera this will be a wonderful way to get a taste of what you’ve been missing at affordable prices. Opera Brava’s exciting summer productions have been touring Britain with professional singers and orchestra for 30 years. They guarantee that you will come away moved and enriched by the timeless stories and the amazing music. The singers’ wonderful voices partnered by sumptuous orchestral sound provides “an experience that stays with you long into the winter.
