You may or may not know that we here at the Elim Connect Centre run three weekly meals for anyone who needs them, linked with our work to end homelessness. We host a breakfast on a Monday, a full two course hot meal on a Wednesday and a soup kitchen on a Friday. During term breaks we noticed a rise of what can be up to 40 extra meals served per week.
As a result, we researched and we became aware that there are probably many families who experience extra pressure around school holidays, but wouldn't feel comfortable attending a general community lunch here with families or children because of the nature of the work that we do with homeless and vulnerable adults.
We also found the following:
1 in 3 parents from low income families have skipped a meal so that their children can eat during the school holidays* & 3 Million children are at risk of hunger in the school holidays**
In light of this, we are hosting an extra free community meal per week during school holidays - Thursdays 12-2pm - a complimentary hot meal for families with children who need it.
We ran this project initially over the Easter term break 2019, here's what some people said about it... vely day for families, much needed. massive thank you from all of our family"
"the food was quite nice. the environment was quite good because its full of people which means you can talk"
